I thought they lapped up Nintendo gear in Japan, see how it goes when there's more games to chose from. Also this is just sales figures from one country not the whole world.

Japan is a handheld crazy market. The 3DS is currently blitzing everything over there.

What a gimmick of a console, no wonder Nintendo is starting to lose their pulling power by releasing a HD compatible Wii 1.5 with a "conablet" (controller-tablet) that is still marketed at the "casual" gamer and not at the target market of the hardcore gamers that they wanted, and everytime I see a Wii U ad on TV, I LOL at it and just think of how much money they'll hemorrhage to Sony (PS3 and soon PS4 or whatever it's called in Japan) and Microsoft (Xbox 360 now, soon 720)

Yeah, gimmick. Same way the DS dual screen/touch screen was a gimmick. That motion controls were a gimmick. That the 3DS is a Gimmick. All dominated sales in their gen. The Wii U's first 4 weeks on sale = 1.8 million. The 360 = 940,000, the PS3 = 540,000. I'm betting Sony and Microsoft are hoping their next consoles are as "gimmicky" as the Wii U.

Agree with 1wiierd .. PSP sales were still dominate in Japan a long time after Western Gamers were throwing them in the back of cupboards.
Pretty sure there was a stat a month or 2 ago about 3DS total sales dwarfing PS3s in Japan also.

Well seeing as they make a profit on the wii u as soon as they sell 1 game, I imagine they aren't hemoriging much money at all. And considering how well the wii and 3ds sold, nintendo have plenty of cash in the stockpile. I'm very happy with my wii u and hope it succeeds. I love the gamepad and HD versions of Nintendo franchises is what I've wanted for years. It's also selling far better than Xbox 360 and ps3 did in their opening weeks. So the wii u doesn't suit you, clearly it does for many others.

Here's something for you, the PS Vita is actually out-selling the Wii U in the UK!

Hey leave it out! resident MMGN pom here! The poms just know a FAIL product when they see one. Nintendo are gonna have to do a lot better than this to prove a success, imo when it comes to third party support i think they have already lost because by the time they have any chance of getting some attention nextgen will arrive and oblitirate it. Being less powerful and having a screen to develop for is gonna work against it big time in our financial climate.

Looks like things are swinging around in the sales department, a million units sold so far wiiudaily.com/...
Overall software sales are good too wiiudaily.com/... but as you can see the little 3DS is the one that's holding the brunt of the weight. Maybe Nintendo should start making HD and/or optimised versions of the popular 3DS games for the Wii U, throw in some sort of connectivity as well.
I know the later link is more the 3DS doing well and not the Wii U but games are still being sold and overall the company is doing well which means more money for development for the Wii U.

    [PSP] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu 2013 – 38,179 (74,181)
    PSP – 3,680 (3,807)

Is the PSP the most underrated (commercially) gaming device ever?

    Has unbelievable legs.

It's an entirely different console in Japan.

For the games it's total sales, for the consoles the previous weeks sales.

Can't say I'm not surprised. As good as the game may end up being, there just isn't the same excitement that comes with a 'new' Mario title. Personally I see 3D world as Standard Nintendo fare. Sure it looks great, and will be fun......but thats what Mario games are supposed to be.

    3D Mario sales in Japan

I'm not surprised it's had the worst first week of the bunch - and was beaten by Mario 64 as a launch title twice. A year after launch it should be comfortably outselling those numbers - strange consider NSMBU as a Wii U launch title sold 200K, but then a year later the better game does half as well...
