Release Date: Beta Q1 2014/Launches Q2 2014
So this is an action role-playing first-person shooter … or something. I saw it at E3, although am yet to go hands-on. This could be Activision’s big new franchise alongside Call of Duty, and with Titanfall coming from the guys that made CoD4 (but published by EA), Destiny could really ramp up the competitiveness in the genre. Destiny is described as a “shared game world”, so it’s kind of like that always-online experience we’ve seen in games like Brink. Although I assume (read: hope) it’ll perform better than that. Bungie says the game world will be “alive”, although we preview we saw was anything but. It looks cool and I’m hopeful. It’s Bungie, after all.

You may have heard the comparisons and similarities. They’re all true: Titanfall feels like Call of Duty … meets Mirror’s Edge … meets anything with mechs. It’s fun, fast and explosive, and has all of the satisfaction of a Call of Duty game before they all got really boring. This is from the guys that helped make the original Call of Duty 4, and from what I’ve played they’re bringing a lot of what they learnt working on that franchise to this new one from EA.
Release Date: Q4 2014
A disease spreads on Black Friday that consumes the US in five days. It’s called “Mass consumerism” (lol). No but seriously, this latest Tom Clancy entry, coming to next-gen consoles and PC, is an MMO in which players join forces to “save what remains”. We haven’t seen much but it sounds promising.
Release Date: Q2 2014
I’m just going to leave this here.
Release Date: TBC
Remedy produced one of the best experiences for me last generation with Alan Wake. I have faith that they can deliver again with this game. It's set in the fictional North Eastern U.S. Riverport University where a time travel experiment has gone wrong, giving the three main characters, Jack Joyce, Beth Wilder, and Paul Serene the ability to manipulate time. It will also have a tie-in television series.
Release Date: TBA 2014
This game is set in an alternate universe, where a group of knights protect the world from half-bred monsters. The trailer produced some nice and intriguing CG moments but we haven’t seen gameplay. Still, it’s set during a fascinating time period -- despite being “alternate” -- and is being made from the ground up specifically for PS4. One of my most anticipated PS4 exclusives.
Release Date: TBC 2014
This open-world shooter from the Insomniac guys sounds like a mix between Mirror’s Edge, Brink, Crackdown and Left 4 Dead. Do you really need anything else to convince you? The trailer has a cool art design, but I need to see this baby in action!
Release Date: TBA
One of Microsoft’s new studios, many at first thought Black Tusk was working on the next Halo. It’s not, but was instead tasked with created a franchise that can compete with Halo. Interesting. Checking out this trailer. 2014 is probably a pipedream, though.
Release Date: Q2 2014
I played the PS4 version of this at Gamescom, and I’m pretty confident that Ubisoft can iron out any graphical issues when it launches. The delay may have been the best thing for this game. But it plays and looks great (really, it does), and it should mix up the open-world genre. Hopefully this franchise can turn into the new generation’s Assassin’s Creed.
Release Date: March 6, 2014
Has anyone played this game yet? Does it matter? I saw gameplay at Gamescom, and I haven’t laughed that hard at a game since … well, forever! It blends some really interesting RPG gameplay and mechanics with hilarious South Park humour. A must-have for fans of the series, and certainly one of the most interesting games of 2014.
