Awesome! Top 5 games of E3 2013

E3 is over! I’m finally back in Australia after making the rookie mistake of going to Vegas already wrecked — I highly recommend it if you want to adjust to life with almost no sleep.

Looking back at the whirlwind three days filled with caffeine, beer and just as many booth beefcakes as scantily clad babes, here are my top five games of the show.

OH! I should mention these are my favourite games from E3. Not MMGN’s. Fellow editor Gaetano Prestia has compiled his own list as we mostly saw different games — and the likes of The Evil Within and Call of Duty: Ghosts were not considered because I saw them before E3.

(I also know you really care about what I hated — that’s tomorrow, and I won’t be making any new friends.)

Dead Rising 3

Dead Rising 3 was one of the few actually next-gen games I saw — none of this cross-gen rubbish — and the best example of a game harnessing the true power of the Xbox One. The massive map, bigger than those of the first two games combined, never needs to stop to load. It’s streamed in real time, removing the cheap tactic of entering a load-bearing building to escape peril.

Hundreds of zombies were on screen simultaneously, and each acted independently as a blood-thirsty man-eater. They were attracted by loud noises — including real screams heard by Kinect — and equally as distracted by flares and other such calamities.

While next-gen games don’t look that much better than current hardware, Dead Rising 3 demonstrates a quantum leap forward in technical performance. This just wasn’t possible on Xbox 360.

Titanfall

Just as single-player games shouldn’t needlessly include a multiplayer component, multiplayer-only games are perfect in my book, as long as they use the obscure formula to do something special.

Titanfall promises to deliver, with futuristic weapons and gadgets and those massive mechs known as “Titans” that completely change the face of a firefight. All with multiple players. All the time.

I saw an extended version of what was unveiled during the press conference — while it was hands-off, a team of players were actually playing live — and wow: this is my most anticipated current-cross-next-gen exclusive, heading only to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 (and also Windows, apparently). Look what this cross-gen madness has become.

Watch_Dogs

Watch_Dogs looked amazing at Ubisoft’s media conference, but it’s what they showed us behind closed doors that spiked my levels of excitement from "looks cool" to "13-year-old awaiting Resident Evil 4".

After rewatching the briefing, Ubisoft unveiled hacking other players' games. With the feature turned on, anyone can join your game, without your knowledge, and hack Adrian. If they drive erratically and run for miles, they’ll be easy to spot, but if they blend in it will be impossible to differentiate them from the AI world. Your only warning will be a hacking alert and prompt to search for the offender.

If you fail to apprehend the suspect, you’ll have the option to join their game to counter-hack, all without their knowledge.

It’s an amazing use of social gaming and a perfect example of adding multiplayer features that actually improve the game.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Despite wearing the “stupidest name of E3” badge, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was a highlight not only for Nintendo, but for the entire show.

Before your hurl your monitor in convoluted rage, let me explain. I, too, was disappointed when I heard Donkey Kong instead of Metroid or a new IP from Retro Studios. But that is only because the marketing boffins at Nintendo decided to re-release Donkey Kong Country Returns a few weeks ago. I feel like I just played Donkey Kong — because I did — but it’s actually been three years since a new game was released, and that reboot continued Retro’s prestigious catalogue.

It’s unfathomable that the same idiots who released two versions of New Super Mario Bros within three months last year have done it again with Donkey Kong and I hope someone was fired for this. But it is a new game, and Tropical Freeze looked amazing in crisp Nintendo HD — I just hope they let me play with a Pro Controller. As you would expect, motion control with the Wiimote and Nunchuck is rubbish.

Battlefield 4

Battlefield 4 is the frontrunner to become the most popular online shooter this year — technically Call of Duty: Ghosts can’t count, because Activision refuses to tell me if it has multiplayer. Hey, I can only report back what I’m told.

More seriously, the Chinese level you saw in EA’s press conference is even more enthralling when you’re on the ground. It looks stunning with support for up to 64 players on next-gen consoles and PC, and the return of the Commander brings much needed guidance to otherwise chaotic 32-player teams.

They're launch exclusives aren't as good as XBONE, have to wait for Naughty Dog etc.

The PS4 exclusives on show weren't that great. Infamous looks good though. But beyond that the best stuff is all cross-platform.

Yes, I agree, I have pre-ordered XBOX ONE, and as soon as a ND title is announced, PS4 will be mine

Why did they call it DKC anyway.

It should, in no way, be affiliated with the classic trio.

That's my point - the franchise revival wasn't called for.
