Because there's no such thing as too many sequels these days.

A new year sees a new batch of fresh installments to proven franchises arriving on our shores. Whether you're a fan of first-person shooters, open-world adventures or have a penchant for the strategy genre, 2013 has something for you. Let's take a look at eight franchises returning with sequels this year:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2

A follow-up to the reboot of the Castlevania series in 2010, MercurySteam have promised that Lords of Shadow 2 will feature a deeper combat system and more non-linear worlds than its predecessor.

The game will once again follow the path of protagonist Gabriel Belmont, or Dracula as he was revealed to be in Lords of Shadow. Seeking to be released from his immortal bonds to join his beloved wife, Marie, Dracula must return to the Belmont castle and face a new and potent threat.

Release date: TBA 2013.

Company of Heroes 2

With a predecessor hailed as one of the greatest RTS games of all time, Company of Heroes 2 certainly has some big shoes to fill. This time around, the game will again revolve around the events of World War II, this time, however, focusing on the Eastern Front.

The Soviet Red Army will feature as a new playable faction, with Relic Entertainment also introducing new elements to the battlefield such as alternating weather conditions and technology to better emulate real-life visibility of troops.

Release date: March 2013.

Crysis 3

A direct sequel to 2011's Crysis 2, the third installment will see players again take on the role of Prophet. Upon returning to New York (set 24 years after the events of the previous game, in 2047), he finds the city at the mercy of the evil C.E.L.L corporation and must do whatever it takes to rid the city of the giant Nanodome C.E.L.L has created to entrap its citizens.

If you're a PC nut, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has stated the power of Crysis 3 will "melt down PCs" - if you were disappointed with Crysis 2's lack of grunt, here's hoping Crytek can set the standard here again.

Release date: Crysis 3 hits Aussie shores on February 21, 2013.

Grand Theft Auto V

The grandaddy of 'em all and arguably the year's biggest game release, GTA V is set to blow our minds with more action and drama than we've ever seen, and planes - need I say more? In a series first, the story will be told through the eyes of three separate player-controlled protagonists in Michael, Trevor and Franklin, complete with interwoven stories.

The world of GTA V is said to be larger than that of Red Dead Redemption, GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV combined, which, if you've played all three games before, is an insane concept to get your head around and one we're all itching to see.

Release date: September 17, 2013.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

It's been 12 years in the making but Luigi is back and this time, he's heading to the 3DS. Way back in 2001 Luigi's Mansion became the GameCube's most popular launch title, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is set to feature similar elements to its predecessor, whilst incorporating technology made possible by the 3DS handheld.

Not unlike the original, Professor. E. Gadd sends Luigi on various missions to explore the five haunted mansions, with the Poltergust 5000 (we can presume it's been upgraded in the last 12 years) on hand yet again to capture those pesky ghosts. This time around, the game will feature a more puzzle-oriented system, as well as a complete overhauling of the way the player captures ghosts. The 3DS gyroscrope and accelerometer will also be used to control certain aspects of Luigi's movement.

Release date: March 2013.

Metro: Last Light

Metro: Last Light is the sequel to 2010's Metro 2033, and if previews are anything to go by, 4A Games are set to deliver one of the most stunning and chilling post-apocalyptic environments we've ever seen. Details are still scarce surrounding the story - all we know is that it will again take place in the Moscow Metro Rail System.

Unlike many of today's shooters, 4A have refused to conform to the norm by choosing not to tack on a multiplayer mode in favour of giving players the best single-player experience possible.

Release date: March 2013.

Pikmin 3

Another beloved Nintendo franchise we hadn't seen in a while, Pikmin 3 is set to arrive on the Wii U later this year after a nine-year hiatus.

Pikmin 3 will improve upon the core mechanics of previous entries, while adding two new Pikmin types to the fray, being Rock and Flying Pikmin. Unlike its predecessors where the player controlled two separate Pikmin leaders, the Wii U technology will allow players to take control of four.

Release date: TBA 2013.

Rayman Legends

A now former Wii U exclusive, Rayman Legends will follow up to 2011's sleeper hit Rayman Origins and in case you hadn't heard, will now be a multiplatform release.

Rayman and co. return yet again for some more co-operative action and the game is shaping up to be every bit as impressive as its predecessor. The story revolves around Rayman discovering a mysterious tent filled with ancient paintings - after being sucked into the mythical world, Rayman and friends must fight to return to reality and discover the secrets of this alternate world.

Release date: September 2013.

According to the Relic devs on their forums they have not slowed down the developing at all due to the takeover. All they have done so far is delayed the beta because the servers they use where partially paid by THQ. There are hints that we may hear something this week in regards to the game :D
