PS4 trumps Wii U sales overall, despite launching a year later

It's only been on sale for three months, but Sony's PlayStation 4 is already outperforming Nintendo's Wii U.

Figures reported by VG Charts reveal the PS4's global sales have reached 5.8 million, helped by a drive in sales following the console's Japan launch this week. Wii U currently sits at 5.7 million units sold worldwide.

It's a damning statistic for Wii U, which launched a year earlier in late-2012. The recently-released and acclaimed Super Mario 3D World is one of the poorest-selling Mario games released on a Nintendo console, having struggled to move consoles for Nintendo.

Sony, meanwhile, appears to have benefitted from an aggressive marketing campaign, in which it mockingly jeered Microsoft's Xbox One.

MS really shot itself in the foot, Sony didn't have to do much to capitalise on that disastrous unveiling.

One mock ad at E3 was all they really did, the rest they just promised more '4 the gamers' so to speak & were focused on the PS4 being the more powerful console this gen.

6.5mil+ by the end of March now they've got more stock will be a fair effort.
