I'd train in this heat for the amount they get paid.

Not the rookies. What do they get? Like 40K plus match payments?

E: Actually, they were included in collective bargaining to get massive increases over the next few years. Rookie pay as 35K in 2011, 41 in 2012, 49K in 2013 and is 54K this year - goes up to 57K in 2015.

Not bad, considering they're mostly 18 year olds out of high school, and is 10% less than an 18 year old on the primary list.

Yeah while other people in an air conditioned offices earn more doing nothing :P

Afl players don't earn much money compared to nearly every other sport. Wrong sport they choose in my opinion.

Most 2-3 year players, if the club has a long, 10-year plan for the individual, they'll get a 150-200k contract after their rookie contract expires (generally 4th year).

I think the average salary is like 90k.

Salary in AFL is reflective of a few things: cost of living, size of market, revenue, etc. It's about right, and it continues to rise. Give it 10 years and we'll have a few guys on 3-4 million a year, which is still small compared to UK and US, but the audience is significantly smaller compared to those markets.

Two years old now, but the average AFL salary in 2012 was $251,559.

Most earn $100-300K, and 30% earn more than 300K. Doesn't include rookies, but does include rookies moved to senior list during the season.

    Wow...more than I thought.

But seems about right. Where the hell did I get 90k from? I know a 21-year-old on about 150k (NOT my cousin - I seriously don't know how much he gets). Some high school mates of mine, one's salary peaked at $300k in their 7th season, then they were delisted. I think that, once it hits that $250k mark, unless you're an A-Grader, you won't fluctuate much more over the next few years.

It's pretty fair money in the context of Australian sport. Plus there are retirement and injury payments now, so they're much better setup for after footy now than even a couple of years ago.

It's pathetic reading people's comments about how he won it for pointing out the Collingwood supporter during the match, that's not why he got it.

Ok I will bite, so why did he get it ?

If it's got to be a footy player, why not Crawford, the guy rode across Australia to raise a heap of cash to find a breast cancer cure & research

It's for his work in the Aboriginal community, just because it wasn't on TV doesn't mean it wasn't as important plus there are other people who are riding around Australia raising money and awareness for various causes, they just don't get as much publicity.

I'm not saying he was necessarily the most deserving and personally I think these awards should be for doctors, researchers etc. but there is a reason behind why he got it.

Being a public figure probably did help him but than the same could be said for Crawford as well had he won but he wasn't even nominated.

I'm not disagreeing, just had to ask why he got it but I think there's quite a few more people who do a hell of a lot more for the aboriginal community than him, his just got a profile so they give it to him to further the cause.

Yes. But you can't question why he got it because otherwise its racist. :'@
