More people are purchasing older games: Just a short opinion

I have noticed lately that a lot of people are purchasing games that are older. Let me explain what I mean. A lot of people I know are slowly turning back a generation or two to older consoles and platforms, such as the original Nintendo 64 or the Playstation. In fact many stores such as Game Traders and even Cash Converters are often selling games from the previous consoles, with stores making a fair amount from these purchases.

Now it can be debated as to the reasons that these purchases are taking place. Firstly it could be because many of these games are often regarded as collector’s items. One person I know purposely bought himself a Gameboy Advance just so he can play some of the older Gameboy games. He could have purchased a Nintendo DS or whatever else is new for portable gaming platforms, however he instead degenerated himself to an older level. There is nothing more satisfying than having an old game such as Pokemon Yellow/Red/Blue in your hands after all those years whilst everyone else you know probably traded it in for a piece of crap that they will only enjoy whilst they play it and then trade it in for the next best thing.

The other reason for this change is possibly because older games are more enjoyable than the games of the newer generation, as well as the newer platforms slightly deviating away to become more household entertainment packages as opposed to being something to simply play your video games on. People would prefer to have the enjoyment of a classic good old game, rather than something that is repetitive like Call of Duty, and that is why older games are probably going to become more popular.

Interesting short opinion piece :P. I've been noticing heaps lately hipsters have been posting pictures on facebook of their gameboy colour, SNES or Nintendo 64. I can tell they are just doing it to be hipsters when they have a game like mario in the slot. They could play these games in hd and at a cheaper cost but they just want to have that "old school" look.

I only ever go back generations for nostalgia if they are games that I can't play on current platforms or get on steam. The Lost Vikings and Yoshi's Island are the only reasons I go back to the SNES considering I can get the same experiences of the other games on any other current platform.
/rant =D
Cool blog!

I update your title a little bit so people can easily identify what it's about :)
Great blog @ManicPanda I think you hit the nail right on the head here. For me, I like the collecting aspect a lot, but the heart and soul of me wanting my SNES collection is nostalgia. I loved these games growing up, and I want to have them in their original form. Sure the Virtual Console ports are great, but nothing is quite as authentic as the original.

I'm not like a lot of other collectors however. I'm only seeking games I really love, and I'm not going to spend a truckload of money to get them. I prefer going to garage sales and digging out some bargains.

My Gamecube collection is all based upon recommendations from MMGN members, so I'm basically just picking up titles I've heard good things about as I go along.
Nice first post.

I personally think that gamers from the 80s, 90s, early 00s are a little sick of the industry these days. Games don't tend to have that same "fun factor" that is attracting people to mobile and tablet devices.

Thankfully, the PC scene is thriving.
Cool post, I added a Pokemon yellow pic for ya
Nice article, bit of both for me.. Yeah sure there's emulators but playing the real thing on the real console is so retro.. Nothing beats Mario all stars on snes :)
Haha thanks for the feedback guys. :)
I traded most of my GameCube collection in but I did keep some games like the Splinter Cell GC titles, Resident Evil 4 Collector's edition and Pokemon Colosseum. And I know my Gameboy Advance is somewhere in the shed, just in a box buried under a mountain of other useless crap haha. -.-
Amazing blog, i picked up a gamecube, n64, ps1, gba sp, GBA, ps2 and a few other things + games for these consoles so i can enjoy them and so i can enjoy games i never played. (:
Good read man. You're finally jumping on MMGN now, write more! And post some of your stuff from your other blogs. :)
oh good old games, you can;t beat them
Definitely a trend of late!

Also could have a lot to do with the current down time in the industry, only 3 or 4 big games have been released thus far this year. People have extra time to delve back. I've been trying to get into some games I missed from this earlier in this generation ie. Heavy Rain, GTA IV.
The older Pokemon games were much more fun, now I don't know if its me getting old or Nintendo just being crap.

Probably both.
I'm not quite sure if this is a recent or new thing though. Cash Converters have been selling older games for years. Decades, even!

I signed up to ebay almost 10 years ago ('04) to buy SNES games. Also, mainly becuase my house got broken into and they stole some games. ebay's been doing it for ages too.

It's hard to measure but yeah, I don't think it's anything too new.

And even that was a graphics upgrade from older games!
currently it does seem like more people are purchasing retro items.

the older games are just so much more enjoyable like the original version of Ocarina of Time on N64 and Goldeneye.
